2.1 Flashcards
What are the two types of social control
Internal
External
What is internal social control
Controls our behaviour tgat comes from within ourselves from our morals and values
What is external social control
Control over people imposed by society and societies agents of social control
How can culture influence interal social control
We come to accept norms and values and traditions as part of our identity
Confirming to such traditions develops ones identity and after being accepted into a particular community
How can morality influence internal social control
Links to Freud, our superego becomes a part of our personality as we take on our parents morals
How can socialisation influence our internal social control
We internalise rules through socialisation, these can be from parents, friends or religion
Socialised rules become our own, so we conform to social rules
How can rational ideology influence internal social control
This describes the fact that we internalise social rules and use them to tell what’s right or wrong
This enables us to keep within the law
How can coercion influence external social control
It involved threat or force to make someone do something
Can involve physical or psychological pressure
How can fear of punishment influence external social control
A form of coercion, involves threat of punishment if law is broken
RR argue that fear of being caught and punished is what ensures that criminals will obey the law, used as a deterrent
Name a control theory
Hirschi bond theory
What does Hirschi argue
That delinquent acts occur when an individuals bond to society is weak or broken
What are Hirschis 4 bonds
Attachment, respect the option of people we are attached to, crime is less likely with strong attachments
Commitment, committed to a socially accepted lifestyle, more likely to conform
Involvement, more likely to be involved in law abiding activities like sports or studying and less time to commit crime
Beliefs, socialised to believe that it is right to obey the law
What did Heidensohn say about female offending rates (feminist)
Patriarchal society controls females more closely making it harder for them to offend
For example, women’s spend more time performing domestic duties leaving less opportunities to engage in criminal activity
