Life in 1901: Poverty and Health ?

A

-research report published by Booth suggested over 30% of LOndoners couldn’t afford to eat properly despite having FT jobs
-army were worried as there weren’t enough healthy men to recruit
-children suffered, with 15% dying before their 5th birthday
CHange:
-free school meals were then introduced
- free medical checks and treatment
- unemployment benefits
- sickness benefits
- old age pension
-old age pensions

  • set up after WWII
  • all medical treatment free include doctore, hospital and dentist
  • poor received benefits
  • all workers paid for the NHS via a national insurance contribution (tax)

The Titanic (p14-17)

A
  • sailed in 1912. maiden voyage
  • 3 football pitches , taller than 17 storey building. Immense size
  • was believed to be unsinkable
  • some of the richest people in the world were on board
  • however the majority were poor, paying for a one way ticket for a new life in NY
  • hit an iceberg after 4 days of sailing
  • freezing waters and temperatures (1500 died)
