how did the first magic bullet come into place

A
  • ehrlich set up a team of scientists to search for a magic bullet - chemical compound that would attack + kill microbe causing specific disease
  • team worked for many years - tested many compounds of Salvarsan to find one to cure syphilis
  • 1909 - dr hata joined the team & discovered they had rejected a compound that worked - 606th

what was the importance of Salvarsan 606

A
  • major step in progress of medicine as it was the first chemical that could used to kill infection in the body
  • however it was made from arsenic - poisonous

how did the second magic bullet - prontosil come about

A
  • 1932 domagk discovered 2nd magic bullet (prontosil)
  • killers germs causing blood poisoning
  • tested it on mice which was successful
  • his daughter got blood poisoning - injected her with prontosil & she recovered

what were some early problems with the nhs

A
  • Britain had very little money after WW2 to pay for the NHS
  • long waiting times + delays
  • hospitals throughout England needed updating & most were in south east - not enough around England

how did the gov begin to improve NHS by 1960

A
  • more hospitals built around England
  • quality care commission set up to monitor hospital quality
  • GP’s charter 1966 - gave incentives to gps who kept up with medical research & encouraged GP’s to work together

what was the impact of the NHS

A
  • anyone regardless of social bg could get the same level of service for free
  • NHS increased average life expectancy massively as it was free (83 in 2015)
  • specialist doctors + nurses treat patients & patients can now access a range of treatments e.g blood lung transplants

what were changes in surgical treatment

A
  • keyhole surgery - tiny cameras + instruments to operate - quicker healing
  • robotic surgery - surgeons can now use computers to control instruments for practice surgery - used for brain surgery
