208- Communication & Conflict Flashcards
Appeal to common practice
Most people do it so it’s okay
Ad hominem abusive
Attack the person rather than issue
Ex.) “ she just thinks she’s a doctor and knows everything”
Appeal to emotion
Manipulate others emotions to avoid the issue
Ex.) feel sorry for myself after getting written up -divorced, single mom, etc. This doesn’t have to do with getting written up
Appeal to tradition
It’s always been done that way
Confusing cause and effect
Assuming that one event must cause another just because you often see the 2 events together
Hasty generalization
Coming to a conclusion based on a very small amount of examples
Ex.) all babies born on a full moon have birth marks because two babies had this situation
Red herring
Introduce irrelevant topic to divert attention away from issue
(Ignoring)
Slippery slope
Belief that one event will lead to another without evidence
Avoid this!
Straw man
When a persons position on a topic is misrepresented
Ex.) manager wants to be cost conscious, later nurse says she wants us to avoid using supplies to help the patients.
