20.6 Speciation And Aryficial Selection Flashcards

1
Q

How does speciation occur

A

Members become isolated and no longer interbreed
They Continue to undergo random mutations and different characteristics are selected for and against because of different selection pressures
This leads to changes in the phenotypes

Q

What is sympatric speciation

A

Occurs in populations that share the same hapbitat
More common in plants
Members of 2 different interbreed and from fertile offspring

Q

What problems are caused by inbreeding

A

Many genetic disorders are caused by recessive alleles and organisms closely related are genetically similar so if they breed there is a greater chance the offspring will be homozygous and get the genetic disorders
