- April 1842, presented their 2nd petition with 3.3 million signatures
- (link to reforming MPs using petitions to support their ideas)
- national charter association had 70,000 members by 1842
- complete suffrage union had 50 branches by April 1842
- the plug riots in 1842 led to 500,000 workers on strike in Staffordshire, Lancashire, Cheshire and Yorkshire
- overall significant because it was an active organisation promoting change appealing to widespread workers and support.
- ultimately least significant as it was too radical so unpopular and had most short term impact

reforming MPs

- between feb 1867 and aug 1867 Disraeli presented reform bills to cabinet, resulting in 3 MPs resigning in protest to his radicalism
- 1864 Gladstone argues it was a “scandal” that only 1/10 working men had the vote
- John Bright, bham MP supported the reform leagues idea of 1 man = 1 vote
- Bright also spoke at a meeting of 150,000 to 200,000 at Brookfield’s in bham (links to protesting organisations as MPs were supportive so could she the popularity for reform)
- overall most significant as they could actually implement laws. could actualise reform and bring use chartism and other organisations to demonstarte the want for reform

- Richard Cobden led Anti-corn law league in 1839 and made speeches in 1858
-1865 Reform league wanted universal suffrage for men and a secret ballot - Hyde park riots by Reform League led to 200,000 protesting on t 23rd juke 1866
- Hyde park riots stopped with military action (acknowledge how this shows parliament were against reform)
- helped show widespread appeal for reform and helped support reforming MPs
