over ambitious demands
A
- universal suffrage for men over 21, secret ballot, fairer constituencies, annual parliament, MP salary
- purpose of 1832 was limited reform (650,000 franchised) - too fast
- middle class support with more popular causes e.g. ACL
- middle class content with 1832
- discontent high with 1833 factory act as no 10 hour day
-failings of 1832: poor excluded. £10 land owned or £50 rented.

- Newport rising 1839: 1000s marched to hotel, 20 killed from being fired on
- Lovett and O’Connor imprisoned (leaders)
- decisive gov victory
- Plug riots after rejection of second petition. 500,000 went on strike and removed plugs from boilers. 15 counties affected
- seen as a chartist protest, Peel has 1000s arrested.

- Parliament rejected all 3 petitions despite popular support e.g. 1st had 1.2 million sigs, rejected 235 votes to 46
- stable period following 1832
-1839 Rural Police act ensured a nationwide police force - during Kensington Common demonstration London was secured with 7,000 soldiers, 4,000 police and 85,000 special constables
- gov quickly arrested rioters and leaders, railways allowed them to move troops quickly.

- NCA failed due to lack of funds, most supporters couldn’t afford subscription fees so the executive committee were poorly paid and under sourced
- CSU formed with idea of cooperation with ACL but failed in 1842 due to divides
- NAPIP membership never exceeded 500
- land plan failed, only 250 people recited allotments.
