2019 Mod9 Flashcards
The inmutability of species
The idea that each individual species on the planet was specially created by God and would never fundamentally change
Microevolution
The theory that natural selection can, overtime, take an organism and transform it into a more specialized species of that organism
Macroevolution
The hypothesis that process is similar to those that work in microevolution can, over eons of time, transform organisms into a completely different kind of organism
Strata
Distinct layers of rock
Fossils
Preserved remains of once-living organisms
Paleontology
The study of fossils
Structural homology
The study of similar structures in different species
Where did Darwin do most of the work which led to his hypothesis of evolution
On the HMS Beagle
Did Darwin ever recant his scientific believes
No
What was the main idea that Thomas Malthus’s work give to Darwin
The constant struggle for survival
What was the main idea that Sir Charles Lyell’s work gave to Darwin
The present is the key to the past
What age-old concept was Darwin able to dispel with his research
The immutability of species
Suppose a herd of horses were living in an area where food near the ground was scared but there are plenty of food in the trees. If after several generations the horses gave rise to draft what could easily play reach the food in the trees with this we example of micro evolution or macro evolution
Macroevolution
Consider the fish population that is trying to survive conditions of extremely cold water. If over several generations the fish develop thicker fat layers under their skin for better insulation is this example of micro illusion or macro evolution
Microevolution
From a genetic point of you, what is the main difference between microevolution and macroevolution
Microevolution has genetic differences within the genetic code
macroevolution add a new genetic information to the code
In this module we studied for main set of data: the geological column, the fossil record, structural homology, And molecular biology. For each set of data, indicate whether it is evidence for or against macroevolution if it is or if it is inconclusive.
Geological column: inconclusive
the fossil record: against structural homology: against
molecular biology: against
Name two creatures that macroevolutionists claim are intermediate links and why they are not really intermediate links
Austropithecus afarenis
The bones are of that of an ape
Archaepleryx
Has the major features of a bird
What is the Cambrian explosion? Why is it a problem for macroevolutionists
The Cambrian explosion was a sudden surge of new life that seem to be “planted” in the rock
There are two problems they don’t know how new life formed so suddenly and it doesn’t have any missing links
What are four ways that bacterium can become resistant to an antibiotic
1 conjunction
2 transformation
3 transduction
4 mutation
If a bacterium has a mutation that takes it resistant to an antibiotic does information get added to his genetic code
No
What is the main problem with Darwins hypothesis did neo-Darwinism hope to solve
The adding of genetic info
What problem with Darwins hypothesis did punctuated equilibrium attempt to solve
The fact that the fossil record has no missing links
How were they in adherent to punctuated equilibrium explain the lack of intermediate links in the fossil record
It happened too quickly to be caught/fossilized
What problems mentioned in this module still exist for those who believe in punctuated equilibrium
Structural homology and
molecular biology
