2011 BII exam Flashcards
Types of cytokines
Adaptive immune response cytokines
Chemokines
Haematopoietic cytokines
Adaptive immune response
IL-1 - second messenger to activate T cells following contact with antigen
IL-2 - stimulates clonal proliferation of antigen-specific T cells
IFN-gamma - causes activation of macrophages, promotes HLA expression, activates NK cells
IL-4, IL-5, IL-6 - stimulate growth and differentiation of B cells
Chemokines
IL-8 (CXC chemokine) - influences neutrophil chemotaxis and activation
MCP-1 and MIP-1alpha (C-C chemokines) - important role in allergic inflammation by stimulating basophils to release histamine
Haematopoietic cytokines
IL-3 - proliferation of all lineages of haematopoietic cells
G-CSF, M-CSF, GM-CSF
IL-5 eosinophil growth and activation of important allergic responses
IL-7 erythroblast and megakaryocyte growth and B cell development
