Gender and The Workplace
P: Gender and The Workplace
E: ONS (2020); mean gender pay gap in the UK is 7.4%
E: Barron and Norris; Dual Labour Market Theory. explores horizontal segregation, suggests that me. and women work different jobs. The dual labour market theory suggests that women dominate the secondary sector and men dominate the primary sector. This may be because women may have to leave full time work in order to maintain childcare and are then unable to return due to having to care for the house.
Therefore, this implies that the gender pay gap exists as the women are more likely to work less in order to care for their children whereas the father is more likely to focus on their career in order to support the household financially.

E: High Pay Centre Report 2017; only 6/100 chief executives are women with their salary being 77% less than their male counterparts
E: Purcell (2010); argued that gender stereotypes and discrimination create the glass ceiling. Liberal feminists argue that socialisation over years about women have formed stereotypes which leads to vertical segregation. This is because of gender roles such as women being suitable for being housewives leading to prejudices that women aren’t suited for work within the primary labour sector.
Gender and The Family
P: Gender and Family/Households
E: ONS (2017); women complete 60% more unpaid work (inc housework) than men
E: Triple Shift; Women exp paid work, child care and housework.
Liberal feminists would state that it has been socialised through a patriarchal society that the stereotypical role of breadwinner belongs to men and the role of housewife to women. As a result of this view, gender inequality is enforced which states that women adapt to the expressive role within the family where as the men adapt to the instrumental role.
Therefore, this discrimination means that women are expected to do more within their role as a result of gender role norms.
Gender and The Family 2
P: Gender and Family
E: ONS (2019); 7.5% women and 3.8% men exp domestic abuse in that year
E: Radical feminists; view personal relationships within patriarchal society are political rather than emotional. This is because of the division of power where men ultimately dominate which leads to this patriarchal society exploiting a woman’s sexuality in order to benefit men such as how women dress and act.
Radical feminists also believe that once this patriarchal ideology fails, men will then use physical violence in order to remain in power and keep women oppressed. Therefore this shows that women are unable to live their lives freely due to the unequal amount of power that men hold within the relationship.
