20 marker employment Flashcards
Intro
Employment practices: observed patterns in a company’s hiring and working conditions (eg sexual harassment)
Paragraph 1: Sweatshops
P: Sweatshops; a factory, usually within the clothing industry, that violates 2+ labour laws
E: An example of a company that uses sweatshops is Nike. In 1991, activist Jeff Ballinger published a report detailing the low wages and poor working conditions in Nike’s Indonesian factories. Soon after, the brand became the subject of an aggressive and sustained campaign by United Students Against Sweatshops. Nike eventually made some changes by improving its monitoring efforts and raising the minimum age of workers.
E: Dependency theory would argue that many Transnational Corporations are not interested in helping developing countries. Instead they exploit patriarchal values rather than promoting real equality by taking advantage of their poverty
Paragraph 2: Transnational Corporations
P: TNC: A company that owns the production of goods in 2+ countries other than their own.
E: Dependency theorists argue that TNCs have a negative impact on countries by furthering the global inequalities by highlighting their lack of wealth in comparison to developed countries. They believe that the jobs created only increase poverty by exploiting the use of cheap labour in sweatshops. E:The workers that are working to produce Apple iPhones typically earn a minimum wage of $3.50 per hour which would not be considered a liveable wage to be able to provide for an individual let alone a family. This would then prevent the development of the economy by only producing product to be exported to high income countries which therefore wouldn’t benefit the local economy.
Paragraph 3: Export Processing Zone
P: EPZ: free trade zones set up in developing countries by their government. Promotes industrial and commercial exports. Offers incentives for TNCs (law/race evasion)
E: 2019 Delhi factory fire killed 43, building hadn’t passed fire safety and had poor ventilation, fire spread fast due to flammable product
E: Shows poor conditions people have to work under due to not being able to keep workers physically safe
