2 - WHAT IS COLOUR Flashcards
false claims
- ‘light is NOT made up of colours’
- ‘colours are NOT different kinds (wavelengths) of light’
- ‘the colour of an object is NOT determined by the wavelength of light it reflects’
false claim - light corresponds to wavelength of light
- there are no wavelengths that look brown or pink (not in the rainbow)
- so cannot be completely true
‘colour is a quality of visual experience, a sensation’
‘sensations are qualities of visual experience, they are not properties of the world’
colour is not physical, light is
so colour can not be a type of light
-
seeing colour is the action of perceiving information from a correlated property of the physical world (a distal stimulus)
-
what is colour? = ‘what are the distal stimuli to which colours respond?’
-
proximal stimulus = light
- ‘perceptual processes extract information about the distal stimuli from this proximal stimulation’
-
colour doesn’t have the same appearance as spectral reflectance because spectral reflectance doesn’t have its own appearance
similar to how molcules which evoke taste or smell don’t resemble certain taste or smells, they just evoke sensations in consciousness
so the mind uses colour etc to present information about spectral reflectances to the conscious experience
