2 - VISIBLE LIGHT Flashcards
what is the proximal stimulation for visual perception?
patterned visible light
what is light
electromagnetic radiation within a particular range of wavelengths
- electromagnetic radiation = ‘energy that is produced when certain things happen’
eg heating metal > produces electromagnetic radiation > photoreceptors stimulated > see hot metal as glowing (red>brighter and yellower)
long wavelengths
= lower the energy of the radiation
= radio wave
order of waves
long (low energy) > short (high energy)
radio > light > x-ray > gamma rays
radio = 1 x 10(11) nm microwave = 1 x 10(7) nm infrared = 780nm-1mm visible light = 400-700nm ultraviolet = 100-400nm x-ray = 0.1nm gamma ray = 0.001nm
visible range of light wave wavelength
700nm > 400nm
VISIBLE RANGE
diagram of wavelengths on week 1 pg 4
-
wavelength of light
1 millimetre - 10 nm
what is a manometer
one millionth of a millimetre
‘light that reaches your eye from the outside world will almost always be a mixture of all or most of the wavelengths within the visible range’
