2 - venous thrombosis Flashcards

1
Q

Q

what is venous thrombosis and treatment?

A

blood doesn’t move (no damaged tissue for platelets to stick) →clotting factors just chilling so stick together making fibrin rich clot

treat = heparin/warfarin and new oral anticoagulants (drugs that target secondary haemostasis)

Q

what are risk factors for venous thrombosis?

A

virchow’s triad = stasis, vessel wall (damage to veins valves from previous DVT or age - means blood falls back & more stasis), hypercoagulability

Q

what is thrombophilia?

A

familial or acquired disorders of haemostatic mechanisms - they’re predisposed to thrombosis
either due to
1. increased coagulation activity (more clotting factors)
or
2. decreased natural anticoagulants so lots more clots (most common cause)
