2- haemopoiesis Flashcards
what is lifespan of
a) RBC
b) neutrophil
c) platelet
a) 120 days
b) 7-8 hrs
c) 7-10 days
what do myeloid and lymphoid progenitors differentiate to?
myeloid progenitors can differentiate to Red cells, neutrophils & platelets
lymphoid progenitors can differentiate to lymphocytes
where do bone marrow biopsy in adult and in child?
posterior iliac crest in adult
- tibial in young child
what is
a) red bone marrow
b) yellow bone marrow
a) haemopoietically active
b) fatty active (increases with age)
what is myeloid:erythroid ratio?
- what should normal ratio be? why would ratio change?
relationship of neutrophil precursors to nucleated RBC precursors = should be more myeloid than erythroid
more myeloid than erythroid
- unless haemolysis or acute blood loss which means increased erythroid so more erythroid than myeloid
why do RBCs develop near macrophage?
macrophage provides iron & nutrients
how to identify
a) non lymphoid
b) lymphocytes
a) non-lymphoid cells = look under microscope
b) lymphocyte cells = look to see what antigens they express (since all look the same) →immunophenotyping
