2. Thermal Physics Flashcards
Temperature
The degree of hotness of an object.
Heat
Energy which travels from high temperature to low temperature.
Specific heat capacity
Heat needed to raise 1 kg of material by 1 degree Celsius.
Specific latent heat of vaporization
The energy per kg required to cause a substance to change state from liquid to gas at its boiling point.
Specific latent heat of fusion
The energy per kg required to cause a substance to change state from solid to liquid at its melting point.
Boiling Point
The temp at which a liquid changes into a gas.
Melting Point
The temp at which a solid melts to become a liquid.
Evaporation
When a liquid changes to a gas at a temp below its boiling point.
Brownian motion
The motion of small particles suspended in a liquid or gas caused by molecular bombardment.
Conductor
Substance that transmits heat.
Insulator
A substance that transmits heat very poorly.
Convection
The transfer of heat through a material by movement of the material itself.
