2 The Modulus Function Flashcards
Solvant modulus equations
Make the modulus bracket one a plus and one a negative, since it is essentially a negative and a positive version of the same graph stuck together
There will be two answers, however, if only one side of the modulus graph is required (one interception) then only use that side
To draw the modulus
Draw the equation first then reflect the negative into y=0
Negative u’so reflected into the x axis
Why can a modulus equation never equal a negative
E.g |3x+1| = -2
Because the modulus has to be greater or the same as 0
What do the two sides of the equation mean
They are two different graphs
How do you know a modulus equation is equal to another equation
Their two graphs will cross
To find the points of intersection
-|...| = (....) |....| = (.....)
Solving modulus equalities
Solve as if an equal sign then add in the required inequality sign
If a |….|=|….|
Then you
Do
|….|=|….|
- |….|=|….|
Look at the graph to see which is the intersector(the one that changes) it crosses twice one branch of the other
