Either to stop the spread of communism (US) or help the spread (USSR)
Cold War characteristics
two different world views; political, strategic, and ideological struggle between the US and USSR that spread throughout the world

The US, GB, and USSR decided what Europe would look like
The Soviets viewed the lands they got as payback but promised free elections in lands they occupied
Truman Doctrine
End of US isolationist policies, after Britain’s failure to hold the line in Greece
Marshall Plan
Huge sums of money to enable the rebuilding of Europe and reduce the appeal of communism
USSR prevented Eastern European countries from receiving the money
NATO
1949, US alliance with friendly European countries, defend each other against Soviet aggression
The Warsaw Pact
1955, made up of Eastern European countries dominated by USSR; USSR’s response to the creation of NATO
The Korean War
1950-1953
North Korea invaded South Korea, U.N. sent an international force to push North Korea out
The Cuban Missile Crisis
US navy blocked Soviets at the Bay of Pigs
Soviets agreed to remove Soviet missiles from Cuba and US would not invade Cuba
The Vietnam War
1963-1975
Jungle warfare, peace without victory, in 1975 communists captured the South Vietnamese capital, reuniting Vietnam
Glasnost
Gorbachev, reform to save the communism, increased openness and transparency in the government institutions and activities in the USSR
