Other than reporting, what steps should be taken when there is a bite or scratch injury?
- Make sure aggressive animals are contained or removed
- Stop bleeding
- Clean and protect
- Get help
- Report injury
How should bleeding from a bite or scratch injury be stopped?
By applying direct pressure
How should a bite or scratch wound be cleaned and protected?
Gently wash with soap and warm water; use dilute betadine or chlorhexidine
When should you get help/medical attention after a bite or scratch wound?
If the injury is more than a superficial scratch and/or if the animal is wild or a stray
What color container do sharps go in?
Red
What color container does glass go in?
Yellow buckets
What are the guidelines for junior surgery animal evacuation?
- People are the priority
- Do not get animals until human safety is ensured
- Wait for university official to clear
- If holding a dog put a leash on it and take it with you
- If holding a cat put it in a carrier and take it with you
- If no carrier place in kennel or leave in exam room
What is the “zone” for emergency entrance should you need to direct someone to that entrance?
A1 - junior surgery
