2 ROM Flashcards
WHAT IS ROM?
Movement that is possible at a joint of the body.
Each joint has a normal range of motion.
MOBILITY
Normal motion of a body part.
FLEXIBILITY
The ability of muscle and other soft tissue to yield to a force.
FUNCTIONAL EXCURSION
Distance a muscle is capable of shortening after it has been elongated to its maximum.
PASSIVE INSUFFICIENCY
Muscle being lengthened over multiple joints.
ACTIVE INSUFFICIENCY
Muscle being shortened over multiple joints.
LIMITATIONS OF ROM
Pain, muscle bulk, active insufficiency, passive insufficiency.
PROM
Movement produced by external force.
AAROM
Movement produced by client and external force.
AROM
Movement produced by the client.
AROM + AAROM GOALS
Maintain active muscle contraction.
Increase contractibility of muscle.
Provide more sensory feedback.
Stimulate the formation of bony tissue.
Maintain/ develop motor coordination.
Decrease the risk of thrombus formation.
END FEEL
Feel of resistance of tissue at the end of the ROM.
SOFT END FEEL
Soft tissue is compressed or stretched.
Ex: knee to chest, elbow flexion.
HARD END FEEL
Bony block.
Ex: elbow extension, knee extension, plantar flexion.
FIRM END FEEL
When joint capsule and/or ligaments are stretched.
Ex: dorsiflexion, hip abduction, hip rotation.
