What should the line man look for before digging the hole?
there are 4 things to look for.
1.The line man should check the type of the soil.
2. the obstacles around the point of digging
3. check for dig safe marks to make sure he would not dig into other facility’s or power underground cable
4. he has to calculate the diameter and depth of the hole that he has to dig.
How to determine the size hole needs to be dig for new pole set ?
The rule of thumb for pole setting digging depth is 10% of pole length plus two feet.
How long of the hole should be dig for 40 ft cable?
6ft
10% of 40ft is 4ft plus 2ft is the total of 6ft
When setting a new pole. How long should the diameter of the hole being dug be?
The rule of thumb is the diameter of the pole Plus twice the diameter of the temp.
The diameter should be just wide enough to allow tempering tools in the hole with the actual pole so that tampering tools could tamper and strength the soil around the base of the pole.

It’s a truck used for setting new poles.
A digger derrick is a piece of equipment used to dig holes, set poles and work with a variety of materials
How are the poles shaped?
Poles are long calendrical shape that has a bigger diameter on the bottom then top.
When rigging the pole. Where is the balance point of the pole?
somewhere closer to the bottom half of the pole.
Since the poles diameter in the bottom is larger then top. The poles bottom is heavier and therefore the balance point is not middle of the pole but its somewhere closer to the bottom half of the pole.
If the area is clean of obstacles when can the crew install the cross arm and other equipment on the pole?
If the area is open and without the obstruct then crew can install the cross arm and other equipment when pole has been raised and elevated by the digger truck.
When pole is ready to be set in to the hole by digger derrick. How should the balance be on the pole?
It should be in the way that the butt should be tipping down and the top should go up.
Note: after installing the cross arm and other frames. The weight of the pole would change. Therefore it is necessary that the sling should be moved to a new position so that the balance would be a little butt heavy so that as digger derrick pulling up on the pole the butt would be down and the top would go towards up. This way the man on the ground can guyed the pole butt to the hole.
When do we use the grabbers on the digger derrick ?
When the pole is fully vertical the grabbers should close to prevent farther movement of the pole.
How does the line man check the pole to make sure it is set plumb ?
He should eyeball it at least from two different positions looking 90 degrees to the pole.

This is called Cant Hook. It is used to rotate the pole while in prosses of setting the pole.
How does the line man backfill the new hole.?
Backfilling is done by adding some dirt to the hole and temping the newly added dirt before adding the new dirt until the entire new hole has been filed.
When replacing the old pole with the new pole manually while the line is energized. What are the steps that needs to be taken?
there are 5 steps to be taken.
- covering all the energized cables and neutral cables with insulating equipment and also
Grounding the new pole to the system neutral. - installing the capstan on the old pole to lift the new pole.
- if necessary install new guy wire to old pole so that it can help supporting the weight of the new pole.
- setting the new pole on the new hole and transferring all the wires on to the new pole.
- cutting the old pole peace by peace and safely transferring it down by poly.

This is called a braise, pole jenny, or dead man.
It is placed between pole and ground so that line mans can move to a lower position in the pole and lift it higher.
When manually setting the pole the line mans will dig the hole with the shape shown in the photo. Explain the purpose of digging the hole in such shape.
This way they create a pivot point that helps them to move the butt of the pole in to the hole easier.
Since they only have to lift the wight of the pole from top of the pole to the pivot point instead of the wight of the whole pole.

Guyed parkers help stability and balance of the pole as well as lifting.
What is the kick plate or bump bord and what is it used for when setting a new pole manually?
After digging the new pole the kick plate or bump bord is set so that as the poles butt is going in it would not scrap the dirt from opposite side that it is going in. as shown on the photo.
How is the Pike held by line man when the pike is parsed in to the pole and the line man is trying to push the pole up into the hole.
The pikes butt rests in palm of the one hand and with the other hand the line man would hold his hand underneath the first hand as shown in the photo.
What does the term High Pike means for line mans who are trying to set a new pole manually?
It means that the line man can not push the pole higher from the position he is at.
