1 Overhead Distribution 1 Basic Concepts - 2 Safety in Overhead Line Maintenance Flashcards

1
Q

What is the tailgate discussion?

A

Tailgate talks are short informational meetings held with employees to discuss a worksite related safety topic. The term comes from the practice of meeting around the tailgate of a pickup truck on site. The goal of holding tailgate talks is to inform employees of specific hazards and the safe way to do a job.

Q

Name some of the structural hazards that might be in electrical utility’s while climbing the pole.

A

Cracks on poles, shell rotted poles. Guy wire, telephone lines and street sign are obstacles that a line man should consider before claiming the pole.

A

Pole Climbers with Gaffs Complete Set
It is used by line mans to climb poles.

17
Q

Name the equipment shown in the photo and explain its purpose.

A

Line man body belt.
It is used by line man to carry tools up in the pole.

18
Q

Name the equipment shown in the photo and explain its purpose.

A

Safety strap. It is used by line man to climb the pole. It goes around the pole to let line man climb the pole

19
Q

How does a line man check the pole for rutting before climbing?

A

The use a hammer to tap on the pole and they would lessen for a sound. If they suspect a rutting pole next they would drill a sample hole to the pole by drilling half way to the center of the pole, then they would examine the chipped wood if the chipped wood is hard and solid then the pole is alright and if the wood is mushy then that would prove that the pole is Rutten.

20
Q

If the Rutten pole needs to be replaced the line man needs to safely remove the lines from top of the pole before taking the pole out. How can he do that if he is not able to climb the pole since its an rutting pole?

A

The line man should secure the pole from all 4 directions with a guy wire, note that if there is already a tension on the line from other lines and pole then he has to secure the other 3 directions as shown on the phot below.

21
Q

If there are multiple voltage level systems are available on one pole, then how are they organized ?

A

If there are several voltage levels available on the pole then the order is to have the highest voltage level on top then the lower voltage levels in order of high to low top to bottom.

22
Q

What is the triangle circuit?

A

When primary’s on the pole are organized in a triangle a triangle shape, we call that a triangle circuit.

23
Q

That is the name of this part?

A

Disk insulator with dead end clamp.

24
Q

How does the dead end clamp shown here. Is holding the wire.

A

There are two U bolts that are holding the wire in the dead-end clamp.

25
Q

What is this eye used for? In the dead-end clamp?

A

This eye is used for the hoist ( re-sagging equipment ) attachment to the clamp.

26
Q

Name the equipment shown in the photo and explain its purpose.

A

this is a hot hoist device. it is used to set a tension of the pole top wires.

27
Q

When the line man climbs the pole and he reaches the neutral wire. What does he do first?

A

The first thing he/she should to is to clamp his safety belt around the pole. Then cover the neutral with line hose.

28
Q

How do we use the hot hoist ?

A

Hot hoist has two hooks. One side is connected to the eye of the clamp and the other side has a wire clamp that grips the wire tightly. The hot hoist has a ratchet that would allow the line man to setup a preferred tension on the wire.

29
Q

When using a hot hoist how do you know that there is enough tension on the wire before loosing the U bolts on the dead-end clamp ?

A

When you see some bowing on the wire.
