2 metabolism/excretion Flashcards
1
Q
general strategy of metabolism
A
to convert lipophilic into hydrophilic molecules so they can be more readily excreted
2
Q
phase 1 of drug metabolism. do all drugs need it?
A
- catabolic
- makes a more reactive metabolite by introducing/unmasking a reactive chemical group to the drug
(if inactive, metabolised by phase 1) - not all need it e.g. paracetamol alr has appropriate functional group
3
Q
phase 2 of drug metabolism
A
- use reactive functional group to add another molecule
- can also inactivate a drug
4
Q
phase 1 reactions are catalysed by
A
CYP450 enzymes
5
Q
? is one of the most common phase 2 conjugation reactions
A
glucuronidation
6
Q
what is freely filtered into bowman’s capsule?
A
- small solutes
- water-soluble drugs
