2. Levels of organization and cell structure Flashcards
Multicellular Organisms
Definition: An organism with many cells.
Example: Humans, animals, plants.
Unicellular organisms
Definition: Organisms with one cell.
Example: Amoeba, bacteria
What is the cellular hierarchy
Sequence: Organelles → Cells → Tissues → Organs → Organ Systems.
Organelles
Definition: Structures inside a cell.
Example: Nucleus, mitochondria, chloroplast.
Cells
Definition: Basic unit of structure and function of living organisms.
Example: Animal cells, plant cells.
Tissues
Definition: Cells with a similar function grouped together.
Example: Muscle tissue, nerve tissue.
Organs
Definition: A collection of several tissues carrying out a particular function.
Example: Heart, lungs.
Organ Systems
Definition: Group of organs that carry out a function.
Example: Respiratory system, circulatory system.
The function of the nucleus?
Controls cell activities
The function of the cell membrane?
Controls what enters and leaves the cell
Function of Cytoplasm
Cytoplasm: Place where chemical reactions take place.
Function of chloroplast
Contains chlorophyll for photosynthesis
Function of mitochondria
Respiration to release energy
Function of cell wall
Supports and maintains cell rigidity
Function of vacuole
Contains sap keeping the cell firm
