2. Infection Flashcards
Pathogenic
bacterium, virus or another microorganism
Pathogen
an organism that causes disease
Zoonosis
an infectious disease that has jumped from a non-human animal to humans
Subclinical disease
has no recognizable clinical finding
Antigen
Substance that causes your immune system to produce antibodies against it and fight the infection
Types of microorganism
Bacteria
No nucleus
single-celled organism
grow rapidly
produce toxins that cause illness eg. strep throat
Chain of infection
Infectious agent
reservoir
vomit/ cough - expel
transmission
portal
susceptible host
Pyrexia Infection
Pyrexia Infection
* Getting a fever
Inflammatory response
Hypothalamus (midbrain) is set to a higher temp to fight infection
Cytokines (a chemical produced by immune cells and acts to stimulate other immune cells) are released from immune cells
Prostaglandins increase heat production and decreases heat loss
Fever is used to stop pathogens from multiplying, stimulate immune response and tissue repair
Temp over 41.5 is considered an emergency
- Virus
- Non living
- No nucleus
- HIV
- Fungi
*
Living
* Nucleus
* Athletes foot
- Protozoa
Single celled organisms
* Malaria
- Helminths (worms)
*
Hookworm
