What was the Law in Wales Act (1535)?
Transformed the structure of Welsh government:
-The Principality of Wales and the marcher lordships were abolished and replaced with 12 English-style counties.
-English-style system of local govt introduced with sheriffs, coroners, jps
-Banned use of Welsh in courts, only English.
Interpreters widely used.
-End of traditional military power of marcher lords
What was the Law in Wales Act in 1542?
-Introduced English law system, brought end to blood
feuds.
-New law courts, the ‘courts of great sessions’, held biannual sessions in each county town
-These courts tried crimes of violence and theft, and there was no right of appeal
-The Council of Wales increased its power, ending the military power of the marcher lords
-Law and order improved and became more stable and less of a threat to royal authority
How was the council of the north re established in 1537
had powers to hear and decide cases of treason,
murder and felony. It was responsible for enforcing all royal proclamations. It organised the raising
of troops for war, food supplies, regulated trade and resolved private disputes. The Council’s
authority was increased from just Yorkshire to the Durham, Northumberland, Cumberland and
Westmoreland, all the most northerly counties of England.
