2 - Edentulous Maxilla and Mandible (complete) Flashcards
What is dentate, endentulous, and partially edentulous
dentate = having teeth or pointed conical projections
edentulous = without, or lacking teeth
partially edentulous = missing one or more teeth which require replacement
what are the consequences of tooth loss
bone resorption
maxillary resorbs in vertical and palatal direction
mandible resorption is vertical and is oriented along the cross sectional shape of the mandible
ridge resorbs
What happens to edentulous mandibular and maxillary arches
maxillary = resorption causes the arch to get smaller mandibular = resorption causes the arch to get wider
how does the amount of resorption compare in the maxilla to mandible
the mandible resorbs 4x as fast as the maxilla
what will an ill fitting prosthesis do to resorption
increase the speed of resorption
How can a mandibular denture cause dysesthesia
because as the bone in the mandible resorbs the proximity of the mental foramina to the alveolar ridge increases, and the denture may sit on top of the mental nerve coming out of the mental foramina
