2. Digestion Flashcards
Monogastric
One stomach
Oral cavity
Saliva containing amylase is added to start the chemical digestion
Oestophagus
Food is swallowed and moves through the system via peristalsis
Stomach
Hydrochloric acid and enzymes break down the food more and turn it into chyme
What is the small intestine made up of?
Duodenum
Jejunum
Ileum
Duodenum (Small intestine)
Bile is added from the liver which emulsifies fats and neutralises acid
Liver
Stores surplus amounts of some vitamins
Pancreas
Secretes more enzymes and bicarbonate which enter the duodenum
Jejunum and Ilium (Small intestine)
Nutrients are absorbed
What is the large intestine made up of?
Colon
Caecum
Rectum
Large intestine
Absorption of water and water soluble vitamins
Rectum
Allows waste matter to be stored before excretion
Anus
Exterior opening for faeces
Peristalsis
Rhythmic muscular contractions to push food through the digestive tract
Mechanical digestion
Occurs in the oral cavity and stomach, large pieces of food are ingested and physically broken down into smaller pieces
Chemical digestion
Occurs in the oral cavity and stomach, food is broken down using enzymes, acids and bile into nutrients for absorption
Coprophagia
Eats their own faeces
Absorption in the large intestine
The large intestine has a bigger surface area for absorption of nutrients
Rumen
- largest stomach compartment
- acts as storage for food
- also a fermentation vat
Reticulum
Removes large particles and carries out retro-peristalsis
Omasum
Absorbs water and salt
Abomasum
The true stomach where enzymes break up food
Avian Digestion
The digestion of birds
What order does food move in the avian digestion cycle?
Mouth, oesophagus, crop, proventriculus, ventriculus (gizzard), caeca, cloaca
