1. Skeletal Structure + Function Flashcards
Functions of the skeleton
- Support
- Locomotion
- Protection
- Storage (vitamins and minerals)
- Haemopoiesis (produces blood cells)
Axial Skeleton
Runs from the skull to the tip of the tail.
Skull, rib cage, mandible
Appendicular Skeleton
The limbs to their attachments
Ulna, scapula, fibula ect.
Joint
The point at which bones meet allowing movement.
Tendon
Connects the bone to bone
Ligament
Connects muscle to bone
Muscle
Function to produce force and motion
Cartilage
Maintains joint motion and cushions bones against impact
The 3 Joints
Fibrous - fixed by fibrous tissue. No movement
Cartilaginous - held together by cartilage. Slight movement
Synovial - allows a wide range of movement
Hyaline cartilage
Reduces friction, shock absorber
Synovial membrane
Produces synovial fluid
Synovial fluid
Lubricates the joint, provides nutrition for the hyaline cartilage
Fibrous joint capsule
Around synovial joint for protection
