2 d Movement of substances into and out of cells Flashcards
2.15 2.16 2.17
What is diffusion
Random movement of particles from an area of a high concentration to an area of low concentration
What restricts the free movement of particles
Cell membrane
What is meant by partially permeable membrane
Allows only some molecules to cross easily, but others with difficulty
Whats the simplest sort of selection of the partially permeable membrane
By the size of the molecule
What does diffusion help with for organisms
- obtain many of their requirements
-Get rid of waste products
-Carry out gas exchange for respiration
How does water move in and out of cells
Via osmosis
What is osmosis
Movement of water from a region of higher water potential to lower water potential through a partially permeable membrane
Why can water particles move through partially permeable membranes
Water molecules are smaller than solute molecules
What would happen if an animal cell would be placed in a strong sugar solution
The water potential out the cell would be lower, it will loose the water by osmosis and shrivell up
What would happen if an animal cell would be placed in distilled water
The water potential out the cell would be higher, it will gain water by osmosis and eventually burst
Explain hypertonic solution
-Red blood cells have higher water potential than solution
-Net movement of water out
-Shrivelled cells
Explain isotonic solution
-Water potential equal between red blood cell and solution
-No net movement of water
-Normal cells
Explain hypotonic solution
