2: Biochemistry Flashcards
Polar Solvent
Dissolves ionic bonds, large dipole moment, dissolve polar compounds
Salts
Ionic compounds, electrolytes, vital for homeostasis
Polymer
Chain of molecules
Triglycerides
3 fatty acids and 1 glycerol. Used for energy storage
Saturated Lipid
One covalent bond, linear structure
Unsaturated Lipid
One or more double bonds cause a kink (non-linear, can’t pack together)
Phospholipids
2 fatty acids, glycerol, and phosphorus group
Steroids
Lipids with 4 interlocking ring structures
Eicosanoids
Arachidonic acid in membranes, helps with clotting
Protein
Chains of amino acids, held together by peptide bonds
Levels of Protein Structure
Primary (linear), secondary (alpha helix or beta pleated sheets), tertiary (interactions between secondary), quaternary (how 2+ peptides interact)
Fibrous vs. Globular
Strand-like, structural, and water insoluble vs. compast, sensitive, and water-soluble
Denaturation
Globular proteins unfold due to extreme conditions
Enzymes
Biological catalysts, speeds up reactions
Nucleic Acid
Nucleotides, nitrogen bases, and phosphate groups
