treatment of TBI may involve managment of potential behaviors including:
agitation, impulsivity, perseveration, distractibility, disinhibition
how is behavior management PT?
Sometimes just being in a different/open environment–that can be therapy! Sometimes you just take a lap and pt manages being in new environment with/without losing it
This is a huge step! Brain is processing so many things at once from the ground up
Agitation is characterized by 3 behaviors:
-agression (verbal or physical)
-akathsia (restlessness, need to be in motion)
-disinhibition (disregard for social conventions, poor judgement)
tendency to act suddenly and spontaneously without planning or stopping to think of consequences
Impulsivity
Perseveration vs distracttion
difficulty switching from one topic task to another “stuck”
re-orient and re-direct as needed
inability to attend or focus
can be internal or external (have to go to the bathroom, something on skin, bandaid)
DONT argue or rationalize
unable to restrain oneself according to social norms
disinhibition
describe behavior to pt and why inappropriate, suggest alternatives
unable to regulate or delay needs

Low stimulating environment
turn off lights
volume low

go SLOW
go with the FLOW
re-direct (its okay for them to walk around and explore environment, but must manage it)
be flexible (allow choices)
STOW (remove objects that cause interference)
SHOW (might not remember what you said but will remember how you said it, show respect, involve them in convos)
CO (co treat!)
KNOW (know their background
Someone who should never be left alone requires
direct hand offs
only to family memebers with safety education, designated by a yellow sign on WC
