2 a Group 1 metals Flashcards
2.1 - 2.4
Trends as you go down the group 1
-Relative atomic mass increases
-Melting point decreases
-Boiling point decreases
-Density increases
-Reactivity increases
Explain the trends as you go down the group one
Atoms increase in size. The electrons (-) on the outer shell are further away from the nucleus (+), losing attraction as the distance increases. The outer electrons are easier to lose.
Are group 1 metals hard or soft
Soft (can be cut with a knife)
Are group 1 metals melting points high or low
Low
Are group 1 metals more or less dense than water
Less
When gr 1 metals react with water, what is produced
Hydroxides (alkaline)
What are the physical properties of group 1
-Soft
-Low melting & boiling points
-Low density
-Shiny
How should group 1 be stored
In oil (very reactive)
Observations when gr 1 is added to water
-Float
-Move
-Melt
-K & Na in flames
