1Y: The Earth Surface Flashcards
1
Q
What is the crust?
A
- The crust is the outside layer.
- It is made of solid rock.
- The oceans and continents lie on top of the crust.
2
Q
What is plate tectonics?
A
Plate tectonics is the study of plates and their movements.
3
Q
What is a plate boundary?
A
The line where two plates meet is called a plate boundary.
4
Q
What is a continental plate?
A
The plates with land on top are called continental plates.
5
Q
What is an oceanic plate?
A
The plates with oceans on top are called oceanic plates.
6
Q
What is convection currents?
A
- The magma in the mantle is moved around in a circular motion by convection currents.
- This causes the plates to move.
7
Q
What is the mantle?
A
- The mantle lies under the crust.
- It is made of molten(melted) and semi-molten rock called magma.
- The magma is moved around by convection currents, like bubbles in a pot of boiling water.
8
Q
What is the core?
A
- The core is the centre of the Earth.
- It is made of iron and nickel.
- It is the hottest part of the earth at 6,000oC.
- The core can be divided into the inner and outer core.
9
Q
What is magma?
A
Magma is molten(melted) or semi-molten rock. The magma is moved around by convection currents.
10
Q
What is pangea?
A
- Pangea is the name given to the supercontinent that existed before the process of plate tectonics separated each of the continents into their current configuration.
- Pangea means ‘All Land’.
- The first person to come up with the idea was a German called Alfred Wegener.
11
Q
What is continental drift?
A
Pangea broke up and the continents moved to the positions thay are in today. This was called continental drift.
