Yul-Gok: -moves: 38 -Meaning: Yul-Gok is the pseudonymn of the philosopher Yi I, nicknamed ‘Confucius of Korea’. The 38 moves represent his birthplace on 38 lattitude and the diagram of the pattern represents ‘scholar’.

Joong-gun: -32 moves -Meaning: Named after patriot Ahn Joong-Gun who assassinated Hiro-Bumi Ito the first Japanese governor-general of Korea. He also played a leading role in the Korea-Japan merger. The 32 moves represent the age at which Ahn Joong-Gun was executed in Lui-Shung prison (1910)

Meaning/purpose of one step sparring
ilbo matsoki… The most realistic version of set sparring. The defender cannot see the attacks coming, both most act appropriately.
Pattern Toi-Gye: -Move count -Meaning
Pattern Toi-Gye is the pen-name of the noted scholar Yi Hwang of the 16th century, who was an authority of neu-confusionism. This was a school of thought that rose in popularity after the fall of taoism and buddism that centres upon a societies’ ability to live in harmony.
There are 37 moves in the pattern, which signifies his birthplace on the 37th lattitude.

Pattern Hwa-Rang:

Is named for the Hwa-Rang youth group from the Silla Dynasty around 600AD. The group went on to become the driving force of the unification of the three kingdoms of korea, symbolised in closed ready stance ‘c’ with the three fingers crossed.
There are 29 movements, representing the 29th infantry division, where TaeKwonDo began to develop into maturity.

Significance of black belt
opposite of white, signifying maturity and proficiency in TaeKwon-Do. Also shows imperviousness of fear of darkness.
Choong-Moo: -Movecount -Meaning
-30 movements -Choong-Moo was the name given to the revered Admiral Yi Soon-Sin of the Joseon dynasty, credited with having invented the first armoured battleship&precursor to modern subramrine (Kobukson) in 1592. The pattern ends in a left handed technique to symbolize his regrettable death, having no chance to show his unrestrained potential due to his loyalty to the king.

Why are kicks so prevolent in taekwondo
Legs are stronger than arms, keeps opponent at distance, suprises them with range and strength.
Also based in historic roots, Taekkyon which heavily emphasized kicking.

A brief history of TaeKwonDo, and the TAGB
-Origionated in subak in Yr 1300, then taekkyon in 1770s. Taekkyon practiced in kroea until 1909.
-Was supressed during the Japanese occupation of Korea 1910-1945, in favour of Karate.
-Created by a group of martial artists lead by Grandmaster General Choi Hong Hi 1953. Proficient in Karate and other martial arts.
-1960 Korean government officially recognised TaeKwonDo as a sport
-WTF was inaugurated in 1973
-BTC(british taekwondo control board) founded 1982
-TAGB founded in 1983
-Became an olympic sport in 2000
Why is slow motion used in some techniques?
-Emphasis on confidence&proficiency&smooth technique
-Purely artisic, almost dance-like
-Cultivates power, connecting power lines within body

Kung-Fu: Traditional chinese martial art, styles immitate different animals. Throws, locks and grappling is prevolent.
TaeKwonDo: Traditional korean martial art, origionated in the silla dynasty, distincting for its kicks.

Difference between a side kick and a side piecing kick?
Both very similar butt:
Side Kick:
-Linear kick primarily targetting midsection
Side Piercing Kick:
-Involves twisting motion, aimed at high targets with the intention of piercing defences.
