1.Population concept Flashcards
what is a birth rate
This is the number of live births per 1 000 people per year
what is a death rate
This is the number of people who die per 1 000 people per year
explain population growth
the rate which the pop changes during a year. can grow can also shrink
explain positive growth rate
that pop is increasing
explain negative growth rate
pop is decreasing
explain a young population
birth rate is higher than rate of death. pop grows rapidly
explain adult population
birth rate is not dramatically higher than death rate . slow pop growth
explain aged population
birth rate and death rate are same. no growth
explain a shrinking population
death rate and birth rate. pop will die out
explain infant mortality rates
death rates of 1 000 live births
explain life expectancy
the number of years people are expected to live
name the factors that might effect on life expectancy
- Gender
- Genetic factors
- Conditions in early childhood development
- Marital status
- Economic conditions
- Education
- Lifestyle
explain gender
Mortality rates for females are lower at each age than those of men . Current overall life for American men is 76.4 year and 82.9 years after 65. expectancy for american women is 81.2 and 85.5 for woman at 65
some studies show the the gap is because men are riskier and may lead to high accident rates
Explain Genetic factors
there appears to be a link between genetic factors and mortality rates.
Genetics may play a role in nine of the top ten causes of death e.g. Heart disease. cancer. diabetes
Explain conditions in early childhood development
- poor living conditions when mother is pregnant ;conditions at birth and early childhood
Explain marital status
- Married people = lower mortality rates
marriage improves ; cardiac health and combat loneliness
and motivate people to make healthier choices like regular doctor visits and giving up unhealthy habits
Explain Economic conditions
people in wealthier countries = greater life expectancy than those in poorer countries. wealthier countries have better medical care, healthier choices like (exercising more, smoking less and maintaining healthy weight )
Explain Education
Some scientist, higher education are linked to higher economic status are linked to improved longevity
higher educate lower levels of obesity;tabaco use
Explain lifestyle
historically lifestyle affected mortality include unhealthy diet ;inadequate exercise, tobacco use, use of alcohol, risky behaviour, food safety, work place safety, motor safety today obesity affects mortality today 5% adults extreme obese 1962 1% adults extreme obese today 30% adult obese 1962 13% adults obese today 70% adult overweight 1962 46% adult overweight
