1B - Inorganic ions Flashcards
What is the scientific name for a positively charged ion?
cation
What is the scientific name for a negatively charged ion?
anion
What is an inorganic ion?
An ion that doesn’t contain carbon
What inorganic ions do we have to know?
Iron ions
Hydrogen ions
Sodium ions
Phosphate ions
Where are iron ions found?
Haemoglobin
What is haemoglobin?
A large protein that carries oxygen around the body in RBC.
What is haemoglobin made up of?
Four different polypeptide chains each with an iron ion in the centre.
Why is the iron ion important in haemoglobin?
The iron ions binds to the oxygen to form a Fe3+ ion until oxygen is released and it returns to Fe2+.
What do hydrogen ions do?
Determine pH.
How is pH calculated?
Based on the concentration of H+ ions in the environment. The more H+ present, the lower the pH and the more acidic the environment.
How are sodium ions used in the body?
Help transport glucose and amino acids across membranes - co-transport.
What process are sodium ions used in?
Co-transport.
What are phosphate ions an essential component of?
ATP and DNA.
What is it called/known as when a phosphate ion is attached to another molecule?
A phosphate group.
What do the bonds between phosphate groups store?
Energy.
