Define Hazard
a phenomenon which can cause loss of life,injury,disease,economic (money) loss, or environmental damage
Define the term natural hazard
is naturally occuring which can cause loss of life etc ( volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tornados)
State the difference between natural hazard and a natural disaster
A hazard has the potential to cause disaster but a natural disaster actually has caused loss of life or affected people within a certain way
define frequency
The number of times a specified periodic phenomenon occurs within a specified interval
Define magnitude
The size or intensity of a natural event
Define vulnerability
The characteristics of a person or group in terms of their capacity to anticipate, cope with and recover from the impact of a natural disaster. It is determined by human and physical factors and is not consistent for the whole population unless volcanic. It refers to both the event and the recovery period.
Define risk
The exposure of people to a hazardous event which presents a potential threat to people and their possessions.
Define disaster
The realization of a hazard
Define seismicity
Activity associated with the transmission of seismic (shock) waves radiating outwards from the focus of an earthquake
Define volcanicity
Generic term used to describe a range of volcanic activity often associated with a place or region including volcanic eruptions, geysers and hot springs.
