NOW
National Organization for Women. Goal is to take action to bring equality to all women. Works to eliminate discrimination and harassment in the work place, schools, the justice system; secure abortion, birth control and reproductive rights for women; end all forms of violence against women; eradicate racism, sexism and homophobia; and promote equality and justice in our society.
Title IX
The law prohibits sex discrimination in any educational program or activity funded by the federal government, including athletics.
Billy Jean King
Very talented tennis player. Played against Bobby Riggs in what was called “the battle of the sexes”. Defeated Bobby Riggs, he concludes she was “too good, too fast”.
Feminine Mystique
Written by Betty Friedan. False notion that women’s role in society is to be a wife, mother and housewife. says having a career and fulfilling one’s individual potential somehow go against women’s pre-ordained role.
Domestic Ideal
Living in the Suburbs/tracking houses. Wife, children, husband. Wife takes care of children takes them to school, cooks and cleans while the husband is at work. Makes sure there is food on the table when the husband returns.
Momism
The tendency in the 1950’s to blame all social ails and psychological problems on bad mothers and failed mothering.
Betty Friedan
Wrote the Feminine Mystique, co-founded NOW. She was an American writer, activist , and feminist.
Putting Husbands Through
Women would meet the man they would want to marry during school college. They would drop out and marry them . The women would the have to find a job which was usually low wage to help put their husband through college and help pay off college loans.
