Explain the role of the Reichstag Fire in Hitler becoming a dictator

A

Date: 27th Feb 1933
Reichstag was burnt down and a communist - Van der Lubbe was found inside the building with matches. Hitler used it as an excuse to arrest several communist opponents.

44% voted for the Nazis. They arrested 81 communist deputies which got them the majority and joined another small R.W. party.

A

Date: 23rd March 1933
The Reichstag voted 444 against 94 to deploy the enabling act, under which Hitler didn’t have to get approval from the Reichstag to pass laws. It made Hitler a ‘legal dictator’ and allowed him to ban parties.

A

Date: 26th April 1933
Nazis took over the local government and the police. They set up the Gestapo and encouraged Germans to turn in opponents and grumblers. Jews, communists, gypsies etc were send to concentration camps.

Trade unions’ offices closed and money confiscated. Allowed Hitler to introduce German Labor Front - reduced wages and removed the right to strike.

By 1934, SA > 100 000. Rohm wanted socialist revolution ad wanted to take over the army. SS killed 400+ SA men and murdered leaders including Gustav von Kahr.

“Law against formation for parties” on July 14th July 1933 banned all parties except Nazis. Nazi members got best houses, jobs and privileges.

A

Gestapo and SS made everyone feel threatened and scared to voice their opinions. People, especially youth were encouraged to turn in opposers. Tens and thousands of gypsies, Jews and communists were sent to concentration camps. Night of the Long Knives removed threat inside the party.

A

Everything was organized in a way that made people feel grateful for Hitler. Made people feel part of a great movement - 1936 Olympic Games. Used up-to-date technology.

A

Youth were indoctrinated to believe in German ideology. History - learnt how Germany was stabbed in the back by democrats. In biology they learnt that Aryans were superior and Jews inferior. Sports and games for boys. BDM for girls - good mother and love Hitler.

A

Banned trade unions. GLF banned strike and reduced wages. Strength through Joy - picnics, cinema etc.

How did religion help Hitler keep control?

A

Hitler signed a Concordat with the pope to ensure that Catholics would stay out of politics in return for safety. If protestants of Jehovah’s Witnesses opposed, they were sent to concentration camps. Hitler also organized the Reich church, which forsook the Testaments. The churches were filled with Nazi symbology.

How did Hitler use racism to control Germany?

A

15th September: Racial purity law took away citizenship from Jews and forbade Jews and Germans from having any sexual interactions. Wansee conference - plan for genocide in January 1942. Kristallnacht - 9 to 10 November 1938
- shattered windows of about 7500 Jewish shops
- arrested up to 30,000 male Jews
- about 91 dead - could’ve been more

Explain in detail the state of the war for Germany from 1939-1941

A

Rationing began from September 1939. Clothes rationing began from November 1939. Hot water was only provided twice a week and soap was also rationed. Tobacco became a currency. Germany conquered many countries and luxury items went to high ranking members of the Nazi party. 750g of meat per week.

A

Operation Barbarossa - attempted invasion of the USSR. Wanted a quick win. Bogged down in a 4 year war for survival. Thousands of troops returning home by 1942. Propaganda to raise morale. 1.5 million furs and 67 million woolen garments sent to Russia.

A

War not going well for Germany. Every part of society was contributing to the war effort - producing arms, growing food, caring for the sick and fighting. Anything not contributing to the war was eliminated. Banned professional sport in 1943. Clothes manufacturing closed. Women in labor force. 1944 May - 7 000 000 slave workers.
