What was the Dawes Plan and how did it help Germany?
The Dawes Plan (introduced by the USA) gave Germany a longer period of time to pay the reparations. It also reduced the annual payments. It allowed Germany’s economy to repair and flourish.
How did Stresemann control inflation?
He replaced the old mark with the rentenmark. One rentenmark = 3000 million old marks. This stabilized the economy.
How did the French leave the Ruhr?
Stresemann persuaded the French to leave.
Describe Stresemann’s achievements in foreign affairs.
1925 - Locarno Treaties: Germany agreed to the loss of Alsace-Lorraine and their Western borders. It stated Germany wouldn’t go to war again. It dramatically changed the political climate in Western Europe and promoted expectations for a lasting peace, called the “spirit of Locarno”.
1926 - Germany was invited to join the League of Nations. This made other European countries trust Germany more.
Describe the economic growth of Germany under Stresemann
Germany borrowed 25,000 million gold marks mostly from the USA, but also other Western countries. The money was used for roads, railways and factories. This lead to an economic boom and prosperity, i.e. the Roaring 20s.
What reforms were introduced by Stresemann?
1927 - Labour exchanges to help people find employment.
Introduced unemployment pay.
3 000 000 new houses built.
Why wasn’t the Nazi party popular before the Depression?
- The Nazis had to get used to gaining attraction and power without force ans using propaganda and other techniques.
- Hitler - best orator - forbidden to speak till 1928
- Prosperity of the Stresemann era - nobody saw the need for change

- Got support from rich businessmen telling them he would destroy communism and trade unions.
