Explain in detail the events that led to Hitler becoming chancellor
[1932]
April - Election. Hitler comes second to Hindenburg who won 53% vs 36.8%
May - Franz von Papen becomes chancellor
July - Nazi party becomes largest with 230 seats. Hitler demands to be chancellor but is rejected.
November - Elections. Nazi party drops to 196 seats but still largest party.
December - von Schleicher becomes chancellor

January - Papen and Hindenburg appoint Hitler as chancellor believing they would control him by keeping few Nazis in the cabinet.
Explain the role of long-term bitterness in Hitler’s rise to power.
Deep anger regarding the ToV and WW1 created bitterness.
Hitler’s viciousness towards the treaty and the allies appealed to the masses.

Weaknesses in the constitution caused government to cripple. Many people wanted dictatorship.

Hitler’s connections with wealthy businessmen gave him money to fund his campaigns - notably Edwin and Helene Bechstein.

Arguably one of the most important factors. It allowed him to change the perception of the people and target certain groups. He gave the people scapegoats like the Jews, communists and November criminals. Portrayed Hitler as their last hope.

Hitler had perks for everybody of every class. Strength through Joy and Beauty of Labor. Workers would get picnics and outdoor activities arranged for them. And occasionally - even free vacations.

SA attacked opposition. Opposition were mostly scared of being murdered and therefore dissipated or operated underground.

Hitler was a brilliant speaker and very driven. He moved people with his speeches.

In 1929, USA called back its loans. Unemployment was about 6 000 000 in early 1932. There was starvation and poverty. Hitler offered work, bread and freedom. People were desperate for a change, since the Weimar republic was failing. The Nazi seats rose from 12 (1928) to 107 (1930).

It was the final stepping stone in Hitler’s rise to power.
