19.3 Plantlike Protists Flashcards
Are a large group of single-celled organisms that swim with the aid of one or two flagella.
Euglenoids
Photosynthetic plantlike protists are called:
Algae
Are single-celled and it have about the 90 percent are marine plankton and also they recall that plankton are often microscopic organisms that live suspended in the water.
Dinoflagellates
Are easy to recognize when viewed through a microscope. These tiny single celled algae are covered with delicately patterned glasslike shells.
Diatoms
May be found in the water or on land, although most species are aquatic. Recall that algae are not considered plants because they do not have roots, stems, or leaves.
Green algae
Are multicellular and can grow to be extremely large. Some giant kelp can grow up to 100 meters high (about 330 ft). Most brown algae live in marine environments.
Brown algae
Are found in the ocean, though a few live in freshwater habitats and use chlorophyll a for photosynthesis, but they get their color from the pigment phycoerythrin.
Red algae
Tell me the 2 characteristics of the euglenoid:
It have 1 or 2 flagella and are heterotrophic.
Tell me the 2 characteristics of the dinoflagellates:
Have 2 flagella and can cause red tide.
Tell me the 2 characteristics of the diatoms:
Shells made of silica and produce a large amounts of oxygen.
Are classified by their pigments.
Multicellular algae
Algae can reproduce:
Asexually
Chlamydomonas divides into:
Zoospores
Some algae can reproduce:
Sexually
