What is Dharavi?
Dharavi in Mumbai is one of the largest slums in the world. It was made famous by the film, Slumdog Millionaire.
Importance of Mumbai
- The most highly populated city in India (est. 20m)
- Mumbai has the highest number of billionaires and millionaires in India.
- The city is home to India’s Bollywood film industry.
Industry in Dharavi
- Industry is untaxed, illegal and thriving.
- All necessary amenities such as shops, canteens, barbershops and washrooms are provided. – Many workers have no need to leave the workplace.
- Some (35%) factory workers don’t have a home in the city and instead are forced to sleep at the workplace.
- Workhouses and sweatshops have appalling working conditions. E.g. No minimum working age.
Water in Dharavi
- Water is rationed. It is turned on at 5:30am for two hours only. These are taps are shared between 12 houses and must get enough water for the entire day.
- 95% of water is lost through leaky pipes, allowing for disease to enter.
- Clothes are being washed in waste water, potentially leading to illness
Community in Dharavi
- Dharavi is like an independent city, made of complex neighbourhoods and streets. There are no roads or maps so navigation is difficult.
- People are welcoming and happy despite the hardships they face.
