190302dB Flashcards
Off-Road Electrical Circuit Fundamentals- Part B
What is multiplexing?
ability to send and receive digital electronic signals over a pair of wires at high speed
benefits of using a data link?
minimizes amount of electrical wiring, reduces size and cost of wiring harnesses + components. can add components easily
what 3 multiplex networks and protocols does off-road equipment use?
J1587/J1708, J1939/CAN, ISO11783/CAN
Is there a master control device in a CAN network?
No
What is the device that’s designed to follow the CAN protocol?
a transceiver chip
How is priority determined in a message?
priority code is embedded in
Purpose of data links?
connect systems and communicate info form one module to another
What does ISO stand for?
international organization for standardization
What does ISO do?
implements international proprietary, industrial and commercial standards
What does SAE do?
set industry standards for electronic control systems and diagnostics
What is a baud rate?
speed of data transfer over the network. In kb/s or Mb/s
What is a backbone?
network method of connection. most common is twisted pair with shielded connection
What is a stub?
segment of data link. max 1 meter in length (like a road off the main highway)
What is a node?
a computer or device that has a unique network address ( a house)
What is a terminating resistor?
placed at each end of the data link. reduces electrical interference ( a cul-de-sac at the end of the road)
What are standing waves?
electrical reflections or waves, causes problems with module communication
What is a Vehicle communication data bus?
communication network that connects to all the multiplexed components of the system
What is a protocol?
common language for data communication between modules.
What is Controller Area Network?
communication protocol for on-highway trucks
What are data links?
Provide transmission of input and output signals between nodes and diagnostic scan tools
