Wheeled Equipment Steering Fundamentals and Service- Part A
What is a rigid frame?
a one piece structure
what kinds of steering systems can be used on rigid frames?
two wheel, four wheel, skid steer
how is directional control achieved in an articulated steering system?
pivoting the two machine sections at a point of articulation
what are the different steering systems?
- front wheel steer with or without wheel lean feature
- rear wheel steering
- four wheel steering: crab
4.four wheel steering: co-ordianted - combination: front or rear plus crab and co-ordinated
- skid steer
what is wheel lean feature?
tilts the wheels to reduce the amount of constant input on the front wheel steering system
what way does the grader tend to lean to when the blade is angled?
to the leading side of the blade
benefit of rear wheel steering?
useful in confined spaces
What is four wheel crab steering?
all four tires turn in the same direction and move on different paths over the ground
benefits of crab steering?
provides max floatation
what is co-ordinated (circle) four wheel steering?
rear tires turn on the same track as the front tires
benefits of co-ordinated steering?
reduces effort of rear tires having to break new ground during steering
benefits of combination steering?
can drive like normal on highway but on site can be very maneuverable and versatile
when combo steering is used, the steering wheel normally controls which steering?
one steering axle, either front or rear steering
what is skid steering?
the tires or track assembly on one side of the machine can drive at a different speed than the other side
What machines are commonly articulated steer?
wheel loaders
motor graders
tractor scrapers
small haul trucks and rock trucks
What is part time power steering?
power assist steering system. when operator holds steering wheel, the wheels turn at that specific angle.
what is the amount of assist on a part time power steering system determined by?
amount of resistance that the steering tires encounter during a turn
what is a full time power steering system?
provides operator with total power steering. when operator moves the steering wheel, the wheels will keep going
what can prevent wheels from continuing to turn on a full time power steering system?
a follower valve
what is unique about a full time power steering system?
there is no mechanical connection
what would cause jerky hydraulic cylinder operation?
air bubbles being compressed during operation
what do pressure control valves tend to operate under?
a system of balance
what is a flow divider?
allows a specific amount of hyd oil to flow from main hyd pump to steering control valve and hoist control valve
what could a dcv also be identified as?
a reversing valve
