1.9 - The afterlife and judgement Flashcards
What do Christians believe happens to humans after death?
They receive eternal life as a gift from God.
When does the afterlife begin?
After the day of Judgement
What is the Day of Judgement?
When Jesus will come again to Judge the living and the dead. Christians believe their soul will enter a different dimension in which little is known.
The Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic* church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
Who decides the fate of those who die?
God
What will He do?
God will take into account the life of the person and the extent of which they have tried to get close to Him, by following the teaching and example of Jesus.
Matthew 25:31-36
“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
What does this passage show?
It gives Christians a good idea about the criteria God uses in Judgement and shows what they need to do to be saved.
By serving others, Christians are doing what?
Serving God
John 14:6
‘Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’
