19. Introduction to DMS Flashcards
What is a CE mark?
- Safety symbol;
- Approved for use in the EU;
- (Conformité Européene).
What is a compressive force?
A force which tends to reduce the size if what it is applied to
Give an example of a compressive force in the mouth.
Biting
What is a tensile force?
A force which tends to elongate what it is applied to
What is a shear force?
Unaligned forces pushing in different directions
What is strain?
The change experienced by a material upon an applied stress
How are amalgam fillings retained to a tooth? (force)
Mechanical (undercut)
How are composite fillings retained to a tooth? (force)
Adhesive (bond)
What is creep? With regards to a dental material.
Gradual dimensional change due to repetitive small forces
What is dental abrasion?
Material surface removal due to a repetitive force e.g. grinding
What is fatigue? With regards to a dental material.
Material fracture due to repetitive ‘small’ stresses
What is deformation?
A permanent change, but not fracture, in a material because of an applied force
