1.9 Enzyme inhibition Flashcards
1
Q
Describe how competitive inhibitors work
A
- similar molecular shape to the substrate
-bind to the active site to prevent the substrate from binding - not permanent
2
Q
What is the effect of increasing substrate concentration on competitive inhibitors?
A
- the effect on the inhibitor is reduced
3
Q
Describe how non competitive inhibitors work
A
- Attach to a binding site which is not the active site
-Breaks bonds within the protein which alters the shape of the active site
-Substrate is no longer complementary to the enzyme so cannot bind
4
Q
what is the effect of increasing substrate concentration on non-competitive inhibitors
A
no effect as inhibitor and substrate are not competing for the same active site
