19) Emotion Flashcards
emotion definition
an internal process that modifies the way an organism responds to certain kinds of external stimuli
what NS do emotional situations arouse
autonomic NS
what are the two branches of the autonomic NS
sympathetic
parasympathetic
the four theories of emotion
James-Lange (mid 1880s)
Cannon-Bard (1920s)
Schacter & Singer (1960s)
Lazarus (1990s)
outline james lange theory
emotional experience is by product of autonomic responses
eg not running bc you’re scared, scared because you’re running
what does the james lange theory of emotion imply about weak musculo-skeletal responses
they have weak autonomic NS responses and will therefore feel less emotion
what would causing or increasing someone’s activity do to their emotions according to james-lange’s theory
the response would increase - therefore emotions would increase
what is pure autonomic failure
failure of output from autonomic NS
ANS no longer regulates heart rate and other organ functions
meaning stressful situations do not lead to autonomic changes eg raised bp, raised hr, sweating
